Safety Alert: Alendronate
Use of alendronate (Fosamax) by women associated with an increased risk of an abnormal heart rhythm
What does this mean?
All drugs have benefits and risks. For most patients who are taking alendronate (Fosamax), the benefit of preventing fractures will generally outweigh the possible risk of atrial fibrillation. This alert is to remind you to discuss your individual benefits and risks of using alendronate (Fosamax) with your doctor - especially if you have atrial fibrillation or have a related condition such as heart disease.
A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine showed an increased risk of atrial fibrillation (an abnormal heart rhythm) in women taking alendronate (Fosamax) compared with those who had never taken alendronate.
