Safety Alert: Naproxen

NSAIDS (Motrin, Advil, Aleve) may reduce the ability of aspirin to prevent a second stroke.

What does this mean?

Patients taking aspirin to help prevent a second stroke and an NSAID, such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) or naproxen (Aleve), should talk to their doctor about using these medications in combination.

A recently published article in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology discusses the effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), and naproxen (Aleve), on the ability of aspirin to prevent a second stroke. Specifically, the article provides information suggesting that the use of these NSAIDS may decrease the effectiveness of aspirin for preventing the formation of new clots in patients who have previously had a stroke.
