Safety Alert: Metoprolol
Recall on Selected Metoprolol Extended Release Products
What does this mean?
Although these recalled tablets are not likely to cause you any health problems, you should be aware of the following:
1) The lot numbers involved in this alert were removed from pharmacy shelves in November 2008. If you are still taking metoprolol succinate extended release tablets 25 mg, 50 mg,100 mg, or 200 mg from a prescription filled prior to November 15, 2008, your tablets may have been involved in the recall and you should return them to your pharmacist to examine and possibly exchange.
2) This recall from Sandoz as well as a manufacturing hold by Ethex, another manufacturer of metoprolol succinate extended release tablets, has created a shortage of the generic form of extended release metoprolol. Since neither manufacturer will estimate a release date for their product, it is unknown how long this shortage will last. During this shortage, many patients have needed to purchase the branded Toprol XL and pay a higher insurance copay. If you normally use generic products and are now forced to buy the brand name product Toprol XL at a higher insurance copay, it may be worth a call to your insurance company to further discuss their copay requirements during this shortage of generic metoprolol succinate extended release tablets.
If you have any questions about this recall, please follow up with your pharmacist.
Several lots of metoprolol succinate extended release tablets 25 mg, 50 mg,100 mg, and 200 mg have been recalled by the manufacturer Sandoz, Inc. Metoprolol succinate extended release tablets (often sold as the brand name Toprol XL) are used to treat high blood pressure, heart attacks, abnormal heart rhythms, and other heart problems. The recall includes all Sandoz, Inc. metoprolol succinate extended release products with an expiration date of August 2010 or sooner. Although these recalled tablets are not likely to cause any health problems, these lots are being recalled because the manufacturer did not follow good manufacturing procedures and the tablets may not comply with their expiration date.
