Safety Alert: Alendronate

FDA Communication Regarding Musculoskeletal Pain

What does this mean?

If you experience unexplained pain in your bones, joints or muscles, make sure that you and your doctor consider the possibility that Alendronate might be responsible.

The FDA today issued a statement regarding the possibility of severe bone, joint and/or muscle pain in patients taking bisphosphonates such as Alendronate. This pain can occur within days, months or years after starting treatment, and seems to get better if treatment is temporarily or permanently discontinued. Although this possibility is included in the prescribing information for these products, it is apparently often overlooked by healthcare professionals, delaying diagnosis and unnecessarily prolonging the problem for patients.
