My 29 year old son is on 1500mg of depakote er a day along with along with valium, haldol, cogentin, vit. B 6, magnesium. He is a non verbal autistic man with self abusive and aggressive behaviors. Since the new drug regime he is in constant distress making the saddest sounds, breaks my heart. This is new he use to smile but the SIB and aggression have been helped. Could the distress be a side effect of the depakote? Please let me know so we can help him….Thank You

I took Depakote for twenty years; it was a wonderful medication. A few years ago I developed Parkinsonism; a very troublesome disorder. A top neurologist in Asheville NC diagnosed my illness. I was titrated down from Depakote and I experienced little or no symptoms of Parkinsonism. With Sinimet being taken presently, I continue to live a relatively normal life. Have a blessed holiday. 12/25/11.

I have taken Depakote for 20 years and it has been the only drug that completely controsl my seizures. I am able to lead a normal life and drive. The only complaint: weight gain and increased appetite -- I tried to go off it and my appetite was much less and the weight came off effortlessly. However, it didn't control my seizures. My doc also says I have to be concerned about increased risk of osteoporosis so be sure to take steps to prevent this.
