I was on Metformin 1000mg for about 10 years. I was having bad side effects such as persistent diarrhea, bloating, cramping, etc. My doctor lowered the dosage to 500mg, and these negative side effects have all subsided. If you're on a high dosage of Metformin and are experiencing stomach/bowel problems, talk with your medical provider about lowering your dosage to see if you get relief while still allowing Metformin to help control your blood sugar readings.

Metformin can deplete the body of vitamin B...all diabetes should get their levels of this vitamin tested regularly. My endocrinologist has me take a B12 supplement daily. See articles like this one: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/20134380/
