I am weaning off prednisone and having some serious withdrawal symptoms. I was on 40mg for six months & now dropping 5mg's every two weeks. After every 5mg drop I have been in severe pain for four or five days & then things settle. Just went from 25mg to 20mg & had the usual extra pain but four days later the pain got so bad I thought i was dying. Couldn't think straight, couldn't stand up & every muscle & joint was in the most pain ever & I was on my back three days. Is this normal dropping mgs

I AM A MALE OF 67 YEARS AND HAVE BEEN ON PREDISONE FOR THE PAST 9 YEARS. I STARTED WITH A HIGH DOSE OF 200MG PER DAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT DUE TO LEUKEMIA (AML). ONCE I TAPERED OFF TO PRESENT,10 MG PER DAY, HAS NOW EFFECTIVELY ACT AS AN ANTI-INFLAMITORY FOR PAIN I RECEIVE DUE TO NEUROPATHY (TORSO AND FEET). THE 10MGS PER DAY TAKES THE EDGE OFF MY PAIN AND WILL LIKELY BE TAKING A LOW DOSAGE OF PRED FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. IN MY CASE, I FIND THE GOOD, OUTWEIGHS THE BAD.

I have been on Prednisone for 15 years as I have severe COPD. It has saved my life more than once. It has serious side effects, however, given the alternative I would rather be on them than not. Read about them and ask questions of your doctor if you will be on them for any length of time. Short term use is ok, but be informed about everything before consenting to use long term. Unless you have no other choice like I didn't. They have allowed me to watch my children grow.
