Safety Alerts & Recalls

What does this mean?

The brand name of phenytoin capsules - Epanutin - is to be discontinued, but the product Phenytoin Sodium Flynn Hard Capsules will remain exactly the same as Epanutin. If you take Epanutin capsules, at some point over the next few months you will notice your capsules coming in different packaging from the pharmacy and will be labelled Phenytoin Sodium Flynn Hard Capsules. The capsules themselves will be exactly the same as the Epanutin ones you have had in the past and you should continue to take them as directed by your doctor. It is important to not stop taking them unless your doctor tells you to. Different formulations of phenytoin medicines can be absorbed and processed by the body slightly differently so you should always try and take the same brand of phenytoin whenever possible.

If you have any questions about the contents of this alert or your treatment with Epanutin or phenytoin then you should discuss them with your doctor or pharmacist.

Healthcare Professionals Advised That Epanutin Capsules Are Only To Be Available Under The Generic Name

Flynn Pharma Ltd has written to healthcare professionals to inform them that the brand name of all phenytoin capsules – Epanutin - will be discontinued, but exactly the same product will be available under the name Phenytoin Sodium Flynn Hard Capsules. This product is identical to Epanutin except for the name. However, the ‘Epanutin’ marking will continue to be on the capsules themselves. Epanutin chewable tablets, suspension and injection will continue to be available. Prescribers are advised that they should write Phenytoin Sodium Flynn Hard Capsules on the prescription instead of Epanutin to ensure that the correct product is dispensed.

Epanutin contains the medication phenytoin and is used in the management of epilepsy.
