Multiple sclerosis, commonly known as MS, is a disease of the central nervous system caused by damage to the fatty layer (myelin) that surrounds nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord. This damage, caused by abnormal attacks from the body's own immune system, can disrupt nerve signals and result in symptoms such as muscle spasms, vision loss, changes in sensation and muscle weakness.
