Hypothyroidism is a condition involving low levels of thyroid hormone in the blood. It is most commonly caused by previous thyroid disease (e.g. Hashimoto's thyroiditis) or surgery in the developed world, although in many cases the exact cause of the problem is never identified. Hypothyroidism can affect most body systems, often causing symptoms such as tiredness, depression, cold sensitivity and weight gain.
